Pam Troyer,
Schwarzkoff Elementary School fourth grade teacher, after attending
Lung Dissection Day presented in partnership with Saint Joseph Mercy
Hospital. For information on this program, contact Sue Verellen, Saint
Joseph Mercey Hospital, 586-263-2109 or e-mail her at <verelles@trinity-health.org>.
"Today's
respiration presentation was also well received by both the students
and parent facilitators. It is great that we have such a beautiful
facility for the children to visit and use.
Again, thank you."
Jennifer Baird,
Dresden Elementary School 5th grade teacher, after her students were
part of the 2,543 students to participate in TechnoVentures "Space
Adventures" during November and December.
"I
wanted to let you know how much the students loved participating in
the Space Adventures program. They loved the Starlab experience- it
really helped to clarify the Earth's rotation and the phases of the
Moon. The presenters were very engaging and enthusiastic. The timing
for each station allowed students enough time to complete all of the
activities.
Thank you so much for having this program so readily available for
us!"
(This was the IRCs second year for Space Adventures.
The program is designed for third, fifth, and eighth grade students.
Look for next years dates in the fall. Also, look for other school
and after-school programs presented by TechnoVentures!)
Andy Balser,
Dresden Elementary School teacher, after his students attended TechnoVentures
"Wonerful World of Water."
"Thanks
for the good program for our Sixth Graders. I thought it was very
thorough and well done. I can't think of anything else that they could
do to enhance the program."
Cheryl Cardamone,
Burr Elementary School teacher (currently Dresden Elementary), after
her class participated in a "Greek Mythology Day" created
and presented by students from Utica High School.
"The
fourth graders at Burr Elementary participated in a cross grade-level
activity with the English students at Utica High. The theme was "Greek
Mythology". On that day, the fourth graders engaged in many hands
on activities involving a variety of Greek Myths. These activities
allowed the students to explore the characteristics of this genre.
As a result, they became knowledgeable about how Greek gods explained
the mysteries of nature.
The high school students did a fantastic job making mythology come
alive. We were impressed by the extensive knowledge they provided
as well as the way they integrated this information into fun, learning
activities for our students."
Russell Moore,
DeKeyser Elementary School teacher, after his class participated in
the "most marvelous STELLALUNA experience."
"The
children and the attending adults had a most marvelous experience yesterday. Upon
return, they couldn't stop journaling!
Thanks again for all the information
and updates. The children will NEVER FORGET their experience!"
Morgan
Elementary School sixth grade student, after videoconferencing "live"
with a scientist at the Ocean Institute in California while at the IRC
"Instead of
just talking and listening, we were able to interact with (a marine biologist).
This was a once in a lifetime opportunity. Thank you!"
Julie Wenzlik & Exerine
Lonski, West Utica Elementary School teachers, after their visit to the IRC
"We want to
share our successes in using the IRC this past year with our classes. We also
want to encourage other U.C.S. teachers to make use of all the IRC has to offer.
In
the fall, we combined our first and third grade classes to visit the facility
and we went on a distance learning experience with the Toledo Zoo. We were given
superb materials to use from the M.I.S.D. and were helped to coordinate our distance
learning experience with the IRC. We decided to revisit the IRC in the spring
to spend a day doing 'Centers for Success.' We set up centers for math, technology,
writing and art. We also had our students interview other students and adults
using digital video cameras.
Both
times, we were novices with just 'ideas' about what we would experience and both
times we came away having completed successful learning experiences with our students.
We owe our success to the IRC staff. We were encouraged to plan out our activities
and set up our workspace ahead of time. That really helped our activities run
smoothly.
We
had many questions about the facility and what procedures to follow. Both times
we visited the center; we were very well supported by the IRC staff. Every time
we had a question
What
about buses?
What supplies does the IRC have?
What supplies do we need
to bring?
Can we eat lunch there?
Who can help us when we are there?
What if?
we
were given great advice and reassuring answers.
Don't
hesitate. Call the IRC. Jump right in! Schedule a visit. Use our fabulous new
center and enjoy your time there like we did!"
