Student Activities

Locate engaging, technology rich activities that correlate with UCS curriculum standards. Below are the current acitivities scheduled at the IRC, along with a brief description and grade level for each event.

Student Activities for 2006-2007
Activities Planned for Fall 2006

  • Simple Machines(2nd and 5th Grade Science) One 2nd grade class and one 5th grade class combine to build and experiment with simple machines. Registration is now closed. Sessions are full.
  • Amazing Math Race (7th grade) Step into rational numbers (fractions, decimals, and percents) with an interactive and stimulating review. Registration is now closed. Sessions are full.
  • Econo-Me (2nd grade) Immerse your students in the world of economics. At Econo-Me your students will earn "money" while engaging in producer activities and spend "money" as consumers.The activity will run from September 25th - October 27th. All 2nd grade classes have a session reserved. Please refer to your email for details.
  • "Wee" Citizens (1st grade) Looking for a way to introduce core democratic values? Search no more. Immerse your students in these engaging hands-on activities. This is a required activity for all 1st grade students. Please refer to your email for details and scheduling information.
  • The Story of I (10th Grade English) 10th grade students bring to life their personal narrative by utilizing various tools to record and assemble their digital story. Registration begins September 11th and is limited to 35 students per session.
  • Breaking Down Biotechnology(9th grade) Take an interactive look into the fasinating world of applied science. This activity is reserved for 9th grade Biology and Health classes with each session accomodating up to 3 classes. Registration will begin October 2nd.
  • Ecosystems (3rd grade) An exciting new activity coming soon to address your new science standards. The IRC will book a session for each 3rd grade class. Please refer to upcoming emails for details and scheduling information.

Activities Planned for Winter 2006

  • Electrifying Encounters (6th Grade) Students build circuits, explore parallel and series circuits, investigate conductivity, magnetic polarity and more. Registration begins November 6.
  • Constitution (5th grade) Students are immersed in the Constitution through 7 interactive centers. The stations strive to reach all learning styles, incorporate a variety of technology, and maintain high student interest. Registration begins Nov. 6.
  • Rock On (4th and 6th grade) Students pair up cross grade level to explore how rocks and minerals evolve on our planet. This hands on exploration engages kids with rock and mineral specimens, gameboards and computers. Registration begins November 6.
  • Light and Sound (4th Grade) Students use the scientific method while interacting with engaging light and sound centers. All 4th grade classes have a spot reserved for this activity. Please refer to upcoming emails for details and scheduling.
  • Mineral Geometry (10th Grade Geometry) Students will measure angles and faces of real mineral crystals and apply their Geometry skills to find values such as: Area, volume, surface area, axis of rotation, complimentary and supplementary angles, slopes, etc. Registration begins January 3rd.
  • Write It Out (3rd grade) This is a great way to reinforce Social Studies and Language Arts concepts. Students create, compare and contrast a paragraph about the Midwest and Southeast Regions. Registration begins January 3.

Activities Planned for Spring 2007

  • Kindergarten Greenhouse (K) Life Science comes alive for Kindergarten students in the IRC Greenhouse. 5 center based activities help students experience first hand; seeds, plants, living and non-living, shapes, parts of a plant, and needs for keeping plants living. Registration will begin in February 1.
  • States of Matter (2nd grade) This exploratory activity is reserved for elementary schools that do not have science rooms. Registration will begin February 1.
  • Fraction Fun (4th Grade) Students visit the IRC to engage in 8 fraction based centers. Students discover the fun in fractions through a variety of methods includin the use of manipulatives and technology. Registration will begin March 1.
  • The Realities of Crime Scene Investigation (11th & 12th grade) This activity is an exciting collaboration between UCS and our local and state police departments. With expert guidence students are able to observe, investigate and analyze different aspects of a crime scene. This activity is scheduled for April 17th and 18th. Each high school will be contacted with scheduling details.
  • Asian Exploration Students will be immersed in the rich history of the Silk Road as they engage in 6 interactive centers. Come and learn about the various religions, geography, and trade goods of this ancient era. Registration begins January 3rd.

Traveling Activities for 2006-2007

  • Traveling Through Time Suitcase (4th grade Social Studies) 4th grade classrooms explore the IRC's first traveling exhibit. For more information go to the Time Travels Through Michigan website.
  • Rocko The Rock's Traveling Rock Show (4th grade Science) 4th graders explore a traveling science kit featuring Michigan's rocks and minerals.
  • States of Matter in the New Science Labs (2nd grade Science) 2nd grade students can explore the 8 States of Matter centers in their new science labs. Form information go the States of Matter website.
